Newindianews/ Chapananga police unit in Chikwawa has been shut down after an angry mob set it ablaze on Tuesday, following police’ failure to surrender a murder suspect to them, in order to take the law into their own hands.
Apart from burning the unit and other items including a motor cycle, the mob also ransacked police officers’ houses.
Both Malawi Police Service Director of Community Policing and Police Units, Alex Simenti and District Police spokesperson Sergeant Dickson Matemba have confirmed to Malawi media houses that six police officers that were manning the unit have been moved to Chikwawa Police Station.
Two people were arrested in connection with the fracas with reports that some suspects escaped to the neighbouring Mozambique.
