VILLAGERS AROUND LAKE ENCOURAGED TO BUILD GOOD ENVIRONMENT FOR FISH

Newindainews/ Francis Mpezeni The Restoring Fisheries for Sustainable Livelihoods in Lake Malawi (REFRESH) project has encouraged Beach Village Committees (BVCs) to embrace environmental friendly fish smocking method that uses few firewood to safeguard forests.

REFRESH technician, Limbikani Chilima has made the call today during the demonstration of the method by the Makuzi-Kamwala BVC in traditional authority Malengamzoma in Nkhata-Bay saying this will also serve as a reliable way of fish postharvest preservation.

Nkhata-Bay district fisheries officer, Trasicio Nguluwe has called upon the BVCs to reach out to all fishermen through Fisheries Associations across the district with the expertise they have acquired from REFRESH to maximise profits from fish sales.

Makuzi-Kamwala BVC chairperson, Lester Wakana says they will impart skills to all other BVCs across the district to enable them supply quality fish on the market and maximise profits while on the other hand protecting forests and fish breeding grounds.
