CYCLONE FREDDY RECOVERY EFFORT IN SOUTHERN REGION OF MALAWI

Newindainews/Francis Mpezen. Government of Malawi has also introduced recovery efforts of cultural heritage sites from impacts of Cyclone Freddy needs about MK9.4 billion kwacha,reveals a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment Report.

The report documents that most cultural heritage sites are at the blink of collapse due to devastation caused by the cyclone freddy which affect southern part of Malawi erly this year

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO’s) acting head in Malawi, David Mlera during a presentation of the report in Lilongwe said apart from livelihoods, the cyclone hit hard on cultural heritage practitioners.

Mlera has made several recommendations that include restoring basic revenues and essential cultural services for affected people employed in the culture sector.

Deputy minister of Local Government,Unity and Culture, Owen Chomanika has since acknowledged of the findings indicated that building resilience is a way to go if the cultural heritage sites are to be cushioned from natural disasters.
